Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatments

Snoring is considered to be an increasing problem in today's society. With age, relaxation in the pharynx can be exacerbated by overweight, smoking and alcohol consumption. Snoring can lead to sleep apnea, which involves periodic, repeated respiratory arrest and interrupted sleep. This results in a fragmented night's sleep. Sleep disturbance results in patients not getting enough qualitative sleep. This leads to patients feeling tired during the day, especially during sedentary or inactive periods of the day. Many people fall asleep in front of the TV or behind the wheel of a car increasing the risk of traffic accidents or other accidents. Prolonged and untreated sleep apnea can also lead to depression. There is also a clear correlation between sleep apnea and cardiovascular problems.

In addition to general advice such as weight loss, quitting smoking, and reduced alcohol consumption, there are additional treatments such as surgery, CPAP (nasal mask) and anti-apnea mouth guards. The anti-apnea mouth guard is easy to use and has good results for light to moderate sleep apnea. It is important that the apnea mouth guard is made for the individual and manufactured by a specialist dentist, as its purpose is to move the lower jaw forward and thereby increasing the air flow and the space in the throat during sleep.

However, simple "snoring mouth guards" sold through the pharmacy or the internet are not recommended as sleep apnea therapy since their effects are not documented and there is an increased risk of permanent side effects. In order for you, as a patient, to get your anti-apnea mouth guard under public healthcare, you need a referral with a diagnosis. This can only be obtained after a sleep examination with your doctor. Of course, we can also arrange for an anti-apnea mouth guard for those who do not have a referral, but at cost price.
